Two divisions of trotting colts faced the starting gate on October 5 as the Breeders Crown premiered at Lexington's historic Red Mile, the same day the sophomores contested the prestigious Kentucky Futurity. .

The first elimination heat went to Sven Hanover, who scored his maiden victory at odds of 26-1 for John Campbell. The Super Bowl colt was timed in 1 :57 .2, and was followed across the wire by Prakas, Bon Sport, and Del Grotto. The other elimination was captured by early-season sensation Workaholic, who had been trying to shake a mid-season slump after winning his initial nine engagements. Others qualifying for the final behind the 1 :58.4 winner were Another Miracle, Ron 8 Hanover, and Burnell Newton.

Another Miracle, who had closed a 7 1/2 length gap to be only a half-length off Workaholic in the second elimination, was made the 3/2 belting choice in the final for catch-driver Bill O'Donnell, but he would end up parked the mile as Workaholic, Bon Sport, and Sven Hanover made their charges for the lead. At the finish It was Workaholic, owned appropriately enough by the Workaholics of Ocean City, Maryland, and reined by the crafty Swede Berndt . Lindstedt for Continental Farms Stable, who, after being shuffled to the middle of the pack, exploded with trot to leave Sven Hanover two lengths in his wake, finishing the mile In 1 :57.1 to capture the first Crown and subsequently trot off with divisional honors. The son of Speedy Crown was bred by Fine Hollow Stud.
