Dispatched as the 5-2 second choice in the second Hambletonian elimination, Secret Agent Man tried a first-over attack out of fourth before the half, but stalled out in third on the final turn and had to settle for a fourth-place result to make the final. He was eight lengths behind winner T C I, timed in 1:52 and trotted a 28 second last quarter.

Secret Agent Man made four starts as a 2-year-old with one win in an overnight race at The Red Mile. As a sophomore, he posted a lifetime-best 1:50.3 mile in an overnight race at the Meadowlands on July 6 and backed that up by winning the Tompkins-Geers at The Big M on July 20 in 1:52.

driver Andy Miller: It wasn’t his trip, but I didn’t want to get stuck in and not have a chance. But he kept digging to make the final. We’ll see what happens.

He’s been a little bit of a challenge, but the last month or so he’s come around a little bit and been pretty good. We’ve been tinkering with him all along. Hopefully, we’ve got him set up to where he’s not making the breaks anymore. That was the big thing. He kept making breaks for really no reason. (Last year) he was fast, but the same thing, he was making breaks. He was kind of tough to get figured out. But we’ve been working with him, and he seems to kind of stay with his job now.

Anything can happen. If things work out for him, he can be right there with them.
