Sig Sauer was the 7-1 third choice in the first Hambletonian elimination, and after working out a third-over trip, he finished in the third position. He was a length and a quarter behind winner Karl, was timed in 1:50.4 and trotted his final panel in 26.1.
As a freshman, Sig Sauer won a leg and the final of the New Jersey Sire Stakes and his elimination and the final of the New Jersey Classic, all at the Meadowlands, and added a victory in a Bluegrass Series division at The Red Mile. Thus far at age 3, he was fifth in a W.N. Reynolds Memorial split and defeated Karl, while going off at odds of 68-1, in their Stanley Dancer division. He won the Dancer in a career-best 1:50.
trainer Noel Daley: I think to have a shot, we have to draw in. We can’t draw outside. Andy said when (Sig Sauer) gets in range where he can see, like the last 50 there, he chases them down. He sort of switched off on the last turn there, and he can’t afford to do that. He’s got to be interested the whole way. I think he’s more than competitive. Obviously, Karl is the one to beat, and T C I. But there are enough horses in there to mix it up a little bit. I do not think (Karl) is unbeatable, but he is the one to beat, for sure.
(Sig Sauer) is a handful to deal with on a daily basis, but he’s been very professional every time we’ve taken him to the races. I told people early in the piece that if he’s half as good as he thinks he is, I’m in good shape. It just turned out that he is.
